Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to earn a passive income from your blog. I am totally in love with affiliate marketing, now that I finally figured out how it works and how to make money from it, even as a small blogger. Before I started my own blog, it always amazed me to read blogger’s income reports and see that they could earn so much from affiliate marketing. Like, how is that even possible?
It was only until I started monetizing my blog and really looked into it that I really understood how to actually make money with affiliate marketing. I even earned more than $430 last month thanks to it!
A lot of bloggers struggle to earn more than a few dollars, simply because they don’t know how to do it. They think that they just have to put links on their blog, and that people will just click on it and buy the product they’re promoting. I thought that was how it worked too when I started my blog. Well, sorry to be the one to break it to you hun, but it takes a little bit more than that to make money with affiliate marketing.
If you are a small blogger and you haven’t started using affiliate marketing yet, I really suggest that you start today. One of the biggest myths about affiliate marketing is that you have to get tons of traffic to be able to make more than a dime with it.
This is SO wrong.
And I insist on that point. If I was able to make more than $400 last month with less than 5 000 views, you can do it too. One thing that pisses me off beyond comprehension is people who try to convince other bloggers that before they hit 100k monthly views, they shouldn’t even think about making a dime from their blog. Yes, someone literally said that.
So if I can give you an advice, if you haven’t started using affiliate links on your blog yet, do it now. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you can’t make money with a small blog, because honey you can. I just proved it with my own blog.Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you can't make money with a small blog. Click To Tweet
With that being said, let’s go straight to the part that interests you the most:
How To Actually Make Money With Affiliate Marketing?

1. Get self-hosted
If you want to monetize your blog (with affiliate marketing or something else), you need to be professional and get self hosted.
Now it is possible to earn an income when you are free-hosted, but there are so many advantages in being self-hosted that will make your whole monetization process MUCH easier:
- You can make your blog more search-engine friendly by going self-hosted.
Meaning your blog is more likely to be seen by a wider audience. More traffic, more potential money.
- Self-hosted WordPress is far more customizable.
More themes, plugins, widgets, that will make your blog more appealing and help you guide your readers where you want them to go.
- If you are self-hosted, you own your content.
No more stressing over what you’re allowed to do or not on your blog, or if your blog is going to be deleted some reason (yes, this happens with free-hosted blogs).
- You can monetize your blog in any way you want with self-hosted blog.
With free-hosted blogs, there are restrictions when it comes to monetizing your blog. This is simply because free-hosted blogs were not made for those who want to turn their blog into a business, but for those who are blogging just for fun.
- You will have so much more credibility for any brand that could want to approach you.
Brands want to work with bloggers that are professional, and who take blogging seriously. By getting self hosted, you show them that your blog is a serious business, and not just a Sunday hobby.
Starting your own self-hosted blog is a small investment that will be quickly reimbursed with a monetization strategy. You can start a blog for as low as $3.95 per month by clicking here with Bluehost, which is one of the most affordable and most chosen hosting companies in 2017.

2. Select The Right Affiliate Programs
Not all affiliate programs are equals. There are low-paying, mid-paying, and high-paying affiliate programs that will all benefit to you in their own way.
Each of them of course requires something from your readers (money, most of the time) so you want to make sure that you only choose programs for products that you truly like and use.
I mean, promoting something on your blog that you don’t like that much, don’t even use or haven’t tried would be kinda dishonest. But that’s just my personal opinion.
Low-paying programs are the ones that require the less from your readers. You need them on your blog because they are the ones that are the most likely to bring you something, even if it’s small.
Low-paying programs start adding up when you have a certain amount of traffic on your blog, but even a small blog can make a few dollars with them.
High-paying programs are the ones that give you the most money per sale. They often require money from your readers, which is why it’s going to be harder for you to get your readers to click on your link and buy whatever it is that you’re promoting. But when someone does, you feel rich (joke).
The programs I’m currently using & loving the most:
3. Attract Readers With A Killer Title
What makes someone click on your post in the first place? Your post’s title.
That says it all, right?
If you want anyone to click on your links, you need them to click on your post first. A good, catchy title is the thing that makes people click on your post or not, so it’s kind of a big deal. I mean, why would you ever click on a post to read it if the title doesn’t attract you in some way ?
People need a reason to read your posts, because they don’t know what your post contains yet, they don’t know if your content is great or not. All they see is that title, and that title should give them that reason to click on it.
You could write the most amazing post in the world, if its title is bad, then honey, no one’s gonna want to read it.
A good title must tell your readers what they have to gain by clicking on your post. It’s supposed to tell them in what way will this post benefit to them, make them feel like they need to click on it.
4. Write Detailed, Explanative Posts
Now that you’ve attracted your readers with an amazing title, you can’t disappoint them.
That’s actually the part where most bloggers just drop links hoping that people will magically click on them and buy their stuff.
Now please open your eyes reallll big, and read the following sentence out loud:
🦄🌈 We do not live in the unicorn’s world. 🌈🦄
Say it again.
Dropping links randomly in your posts will lead you nowhere. You need to explain to your readers WHY they should click on that link.
In other words, there should be a whole paragraph (or several) in your post explaining to your readers:
- What it is that you’re promoting
Don’t assume that your readers know everything. After all, if they clicked on your posts, it’s probably because there’s something in there that they don’t know everything about, and on which they want to learn more.
- Why it is beneficial to you
As I said sooner, you’re supposed to be using that thing that you’re recommending. Why are you recommending it? Why do you like it? What has it changed in the way you do what you’re supposed to be doing with?
- How it will benefit to them if they purchase it
What is it going to change for them? Why do they need that thing? Do you have any proof (stats, photos, testimonials) to give them to convince them?
Your readers need all of those things to purchase something. They are not brainless robots who click on a link when they see one; they need to be convinced to do so.
5. Create A Marketing Plan
So you have a great post, with affiliate links… What more do you need?
You need people to see it.
For every blog post, you should think about how to market it.
- How are you going to promote it on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest?
- What keywords are you going to use?
- How often are you going to share it on your social media?
- How are you going to introduce your Newsletter’s readers to this post?
Those are things you need to figure out. Having a great post is good, having someone to read it is better.
